For headboard could do something like this: http://www.hgtv.com/bedrooms/style-boosting-bedroom-updates/pictures/index.html where they used a shelf way up high, wrapped a valance around it and hung a curtain rod behind valance. (Photo 5 in this gallery)

Another headboard possibility--find an old door. Turned horizontally, and painted or stained, could become part of headboard
